Just What I Needed to Hear

I am amazed at how the Lord is continually watching over me. Why does it still amaze me? I’ve been a faithful LDS member for my whole life. I’ve seen His hand in my life over and over again. Yet, every time it happens, I am still amazed. This past weekend, I had a little meltdown. I had a moment where I was feeling discouraged. I was feeling like I was lacking so much. I felt like I would never measure up. I was feeling this way about being a Mom. I was feeling like that no matter how hard … Continue reading

October 2010 General Conference-Cleansing the Inner Vessel

Living in UT, specifically in Salt Lake City, where the church headquarters are located, we hear a lot of controversy between the church, and those that are opposed to the church. This past General Conference led to some protesting, and some heated debate here in Salt Lake City. I’m not sure who was actually debating (and I say that with only a little humor seeing as this is a serious issue), but there were a lot of people upset here in Utah about President Packer’s talk, Cleansing the Inner Vessel. The talk in a nutshell was about avoiding temptations with … Continue reading

Family Home Evening Game: The Liahona and the Holy Ghost

Object: to show family members how the Liahona led Lehi’s family according to faith and obedience, and how the Holy Ghost guides us today as we follow the commandments. Preparation: make or buy a treat and put it in a box, then hide the box somewhere in or near your home. Frozen treats not recommended. Choose where you want to conduct this activity. For some, their yard would work the best. Others would prefer to remain in the house. We used our neighborhood, as we live in a quiet area. Take your family out to the center of an open … Continue reading

General Conference from the Past: Models to Follow

In his October 2002 General Conference address, President Thomas S. Monson, then a counselor in the First Presidency, spoke of the importance of having reference points in our spiritual journey, having models to follow. He opened his talk with the story of a painting he once saw of Mary, the mother of Christ, being greeted by her cousin, Elisabeth, mother of John the Baptist. John spent his life testifying of Jesus Christ, and Christ, in turn, made the comment about John, “Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist.” The examples … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – April 14th – 19th

We had a wonderful week here in LDS. In case you missed it, here’s a summary. We began with a review of Elder Russell M. Nelson’s conference address, “Salvation and Exaltation.” He explains that Christ saved us from physical death through the resurrection, but we must choose whether or not we want to be saved from a spiritual death, the overcoming of which is also made possible through Christ. We are kept on track with our weekly lessons in “Dinner Discussions,” then Miriam begins a series based on Elder M. Russell Ballard’s talk “Daughters of God.” The first blog in … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 15:12-19

Nephi is seeking to help his stubborn brothers understand the words their father has spoken to them. Symbolism is not their strong point. 12. Behold, I say unto you, that the house of Israel was compared unto an olive-tree, by the Spirit of the Lord which was in our father; and behold are we not broken off from the house of Israel, and are we not a branch of the house of Israel? 13. And now, the thing which our father meaneth concerning the grafting in of the natural branches through the fulness of the Gentiles, is, that in the … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “Look to God and Live”

In October 1978, Elder Carlos E. Asay of the Quorum of the Seventy gave a talk entitled “Look to God and Live.” In this talk, he described the importance of keeping our gaze focused on Christ. In doing so, we, too, might look to our Father in Heaven and receive eternal life. Elder Asay provides various stories, in and out of the scriptures. He begins by speaking of a man who had sunk low. Involved in drinking and in drugs, this man always kept his head low, focused on the feet of those around him. Said Elder Asay, “this alcoholic … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: May 20th – 26th

We had another great week in the LDS Families blog. We took a look at our Gospel Doctrine lesson and expanded our horizons a bit. Gospel Doctrine: This week’s Sunday School lesson is entitled “Thy Faith Hath Saved Thee.” It covered a variety of ways that people expressed their faith in the Lord and were spiritually saved because of it. In Cry Day and Night, we discussed how prayer affects us. In Men Ought Always to Pray, we talked about how to pray without fainting. In They…Rebuked Him, we talked about how other people might affect our relationship with God … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: The Enriching of Marriage

In a General Conference talk given in October 1977, entitled “The Enriching of Marriage”, Elder James E. Faust of the Presidency of the First Quorum of the Seventy outlines a variety of methods to avoid divorce by growing and strengthening our marriages. Elder Faust first tells the story of a woman who received a justified divorce, by his reckoning. Several years later, the woman told him that, had she known then what she knew ‘now’, she would have remained in the marriage. He goes on to cite the statistic that, as he gave his talk, for every 100 marriages in … Continue reading
